First cases of Dutch elm disease reported in Alberta in more than 20 years

Alberta has about 600,000 elms

Until now, Alberta has managed to steer free and clear of Dutch elm disease, with the exception of a late 1990s case in Wainwright. But the elm tree-destroying disease has returned to the province with a couple of recent cases reported in Lethbridge. Alberta’s inventory of elm trees is estimated at 600,000 and valued at about $2 billion.
